What Is Fencing? A Sport With History.

Fencing is a modern combat sport that combines speed, strategy, and precision. Often described as physical chess, it challenges both body and mind. Two athletes face off on a strip, using skill and timing to score points by landing touches with their weapon. Whether you’re training for competition or just looking for a unique workout, fencing builds discipline, focus, and confidence.

The roots of fencing go back centuries; originally developed as a form of sword fighting for self-defense and dueling. Over time, it evolved into a sport with formal rules and protective gear. Fencing became part of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and has since grown into a global sport practiced by athletes of all ages.

There are three types of fencing weapons: foil, epee, and sabre. Each one has its own target area, rules, and style. At Valour Fencing Club we focus on epee, where the entire body is the target and points are scored with the tip of the blade. It’s the closest to traditional dueling: strategic, powerful, and honest.
