Why Valour? A Word That Changed Everything.

When Coach Luis first picked up a fencing sword at eight years old, he didn’t come from wealth. He didn’t know anyone who fenced. He just knew he loved sports — and something about fencing caught his attention.

But once he started, he felt scared. Sometimes his opponents were older, bigger, stronger. The mask didn’t hide the nerves. That’s when his coach told him something he would never forget:

“Be brave. Show valour.”

That word stuck. Not just in fencing, but in life. Valour wasn’t about pretending not to be scared — it was about standing up in spite of it. Luis learned that fear would always be there, but if he could face it with focus and heart, it could become his fuel.

As he grew — first as an athlete, then as a coach — he saw the same fear in his students. Kids who whispered, “I’m nervous,” before a match. Adults who hesitated before trying their first class. And every time, it brought him back to that little boy on the strip, learning to fight with more than just a sword.

The Mission Behind the Club

Valour Fencing Club exists to make fencing more accessible, more human, and more honest. It’s not about showing off. It’s about showing up.

Whether you’re a kid just trying something new, or someone chasing competition dreams, Valour is built to remind you:

You don’t need to be fearless. You just need to be brave enough to start.
