“Breaking the Myths, Living the Truth”

The Myths That Keep People Away

Fencing has always carried an air of mystery. For many, it feels like something out of movies — elegant, expensive, and exclusive. And because of that, a lot of people never give it a chance.

Let’s break that down.

  • “Fencing is too expensive.”

Yes, fencing gear and competition travel can be costly — just like hockey, dance, or skiing. But that doesn’t mean you have to be rich to start. Most fencing clubs (including Valour) offer rentals, guidance, and payment plans. And if you’re committed, coaches will always help you find ways to train at home and improve — even without full gear.

  • “You have to start when you’re a kid.”

False. Some of the best fencers in the world started in their teens — or even later. Fencing rewards strategy, timing, and courage — not just speed or youth.

  • “It’s dangerous.”

Fencing is one of the safest combat sports. The gear is designed to absorb hits, and you’re coached to move with control. It’s more about brains than brute force.

  • “It’s all flashy sword fighting like in movies.”

Fencing isn’t about spinning your sword like a pirate — it’s about reading your opponent, controlling space, and landing clean touches with precision. And yes — it’s just as exciting as it sounds.
